Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran

Title: Cleopatra's Daughter
Author: Michelle Moran
Pages: 448
Publisher: Crown
Publication Date: September 15, 2009

The marriage of Marc Antony and Cleopatra is one of the greatest love stories of all time, a tale of unbridled passion with earth-shaking political consequences. Feared and hunted by the powers in Rome, the lovers choose to die by their own hands as the triumphant armies of Antony’s vengeful rival, Octavian, sweep into Egypt. Their three orphaned children are taken in chains to Rome, but only two—the ten-year-old twins Selene and Alexander—survive the journey. Delivered to the household of Octavian’s sister, the siblings cling to each other and to the hope that they will return one day to their rightful place on the throne of Egypt. As they come of age, they are buffeted by the personal ambitions of Octavian’s family and court, by the ever-present threat of slave rebellion, and by the longings and desires deep within their own hearts.

The fateful tale of Selene and Alexander is brought brilliantly to life in Cleopatra’s Daughter. Recounted in Selene’s youthful and engaging voice, it introduces a compelling cast of historical characters.

Selene has lost everything; her parents, her kingdom, and her brother. Octavian brings her and her twin, Alexander from Egypt to Rome and provides them with enough adventure to last a lifetime. Selene struggles to stay and behave as she is introduced to rebellion, first love, and the great empire of Imperial Rome. She goes through many sufferings, but will she ultimately overcome them all?

Woven with immense clarity and diversity, Michelle Moran writes a novel full of rich history and adventure. Selene's narrative is mature and original. Her character is solid from the very start and only grew as the novel progressed. And unlike many other protagonists, Selene is headstrong and knows what she wants.

The mystery in Cleopatra's Daughter is captivating and suspenseful. The Red Eagle is rebellious and nobody can catch him. Selene admires him and doesn't know that he's actually closer to her than she thinks...

Architecture and art plays a big role in Cleopatra's Daughter. It is described vividly and beautifully. Selene finds solace in her work and defies tradition and insists in doing what she loves. She never gives up as people try to stop her from achieving her goals. A+ =)

The Bottom Line: Cleopatra's Daughter is the perfect historical fiction read. It's full of suspense, mystery, and, of course, romance. The ending is my favorite; it's sweet and completely unpredictable! Just like the book!

Author Uncovered: Sarah Ockler (Author Interview)

Hey guys! I posted a review of Twenty Boy Summer a long time ago! It was one of my very first reviews. You can see it over here. If you read it, you'll find that I absolutely loved it! Anyway, I emailed Sarah for an interview about a month ago with interview questions. I know how busy authors can be, so I didn't keep my hopes up. Fortunately for me, Sarah answered them and emailed me back just recently. Thanks Sarah!

Her books:

Who or what was your inspiration for Twenty Boy Summer?
I was inspired to write Twenty Boy Summer while working for the National Donor Family Council (www.donorfamily.org), an organization that supports families whose loved ones died and donated organs or tissues. I wanted to share and honor the stories of the teens I met through the Council's programs and events who'd lost a brother, sister, or friend. Their courage and hope remains with me to this day, even years later. They are never far from my heart.

How are you and Anna alike? How are you different?
Anna and I are both extremely introspective and observational. I am also outwardly shy like Anna, and I was never the big loud sparkly one. Oh, she also inherited the blond curly hair from me. :-) But we're different in some ways, too. She carries a sadness with her always, and is much better at keeping her own secrets. I also think she's more tolerant of Frankie than I would be, especially when Frankie tries to dress her and smother her in makeup just to go swimming. I'd probably be like, "Ok, whatever! I'm leaving -- see you on the beach!"

Do you have any writing 'must-haves'?
I like to write with incense burning and hot cup of tea or coffee nearby. But I don't really have any MUST-haves, because sometimes even when I don't have my incense or coffee, I still have a deadline, and I still have to write! As long as I have a laptop or pen and paper, I'm good.

How does it feel like, knowing your books are on a bookshelf in a bookstore?
Surreal. I still get butterflies when I see it on the shelf. It's incredible!

What was the last song you had stuck in your head?
A song called "Sigh" that my husband composed for the characters in my next book. He was just singing it to me. :-)

What is the most interesting thing a reader has ever said to you?
I love hearing from readers in person and online. They're all so different and amazing. It's hard to pick something as the most interesting, though. I've had readers make me cry by sharing their experiences with love and death and loss, relating so much to Anna or Frankie. They've made me laugh with stories about boys and summer. And they've asked really awesome questions about becoming a writer and favorite books and what it was like for me as a teen. So I guess my answer is... I don't know! Readers are so diverse and wonderful... I just can't pick one thing!

What is one word to describe your life right now?
Content. :-)

Do you have any upcoming books?
My next book, FIXING DELILAH HANNAFORD, will be published in 2010. Here's the summary:
Stuck in Vermont all summer with her workaholic mother, a Tarot-card-reading aunt, and a childhood friend who thinks he can fix anything, sixteen-year-old Delilah Hannaford confronts her elusive family history to expose the secrets that have defined and divided the Hannafords for three generations.

That's it you guys! I can't wait for Sarah's next book! It sounds as equally amazing as Twenty Boy Summer!

Author Uncovered: Carrie Jones (Author Interview)

Hey peeps! Today, I have Carrie Jones, the other of many books, including one of my favs, Need! Her next book Captivate, will be releasing in January, so keep an eye out!

Her Books:

Her Upcoming Books:

Did you ever base any of your characters on anybody?
Yes. I've based one on actress/comedian Sarah Silverman, one on the man I am totally in love with, and one on my dog. I refuse to tell who is who though.

What do you see as your strengths and weaknesses as an author?
I've always been pretty weak on structure, which is why it's so great that Michelle Nagler is my editor because she is tremendously good at structure.
I tend to fall in love with everyone in my books, which is also a weakness.
I'm a pretty fast writer, so I guess that's a strength. That's because I used to be a reporter and I always tried to get everything done before my daughter, Em, was out of school.

What made you start writing YA?
I started writing YA because I like young adults and it's way more fun than writing newspaper stories about land use setbacks and planning board meetings.
I think when you are a young adult is a time in your life when you're open and exploring what the world is about and who you want to be. That's why so many YA novels are about identity and hope. The truth is that I am still figuring out who I want to be, who I am, and what I'm doing in the world.

I write it because I think young adults deserve the best stories we can give them, and my stories are far from the best, but I'm working at it.Plus, the other YA authors are so cool. Sometimes they let me hold their power cords when we hang out, or get them coffee. YA authors (except me) seem to drink a lot of coffee.

What's the most interesting thing a reader has ever said to you?
That they love me.
I am a sucker for love.

How does it feel being an author?
It's really fun, but sometimes it's lonely sitting in the bat cave and not seeing anyone while I work.

Book you've faked reading:
Great Expectations. I am so sorry Mr. Dickens.

Book you've bought for the cover:
I can not say because the cover was sooooooooooo racy/naughty and my mom could look it up.

Book you're an evangelist for:
Sherman Alexie's THE TOUGHEST INDIAN IN THE WORLD. I am such a fangirl over that book. It's kind of embarrassing. I dropped mine in the tub once and cried.

Anything else you'd like to add?
Just thank you for hosting me! It was so nice of you.

That was a hilarious interview! Thanks so much Carrie for letting me interview you!

I loved her answer for the most interesting thing a reader has ever said to you! Hehe!

Never Bite a Boy On the First Date by Tamara Summers

Title: Never Bite a Boy On the First Date
Author: Tamara Summers (pseudonym)
Pages: 288
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: September 29, 2009

1. I've got a few issues:
2. I'm a vampire now.
3. One of my classmates was found dead, with telltale fang marks.
4. I didn't do it! (really!)
5. Nobody believes me, so . . .
6. I'm going to have to find the real killer. I've already got three suspects. (three very cute suspects.)
7. One more problem: I am seriously falling for one of them . . . but what if he's the killer?

Kira, a normal 16 year-old-turned-vampire, is being accused of killing a fellow classmate at school; a pig-headed jock called Tex. If she doesn't find out who killed him, she's going to be locked up in a coffin for a very, very, long time by her vampire parents. She makes a list and has her top three suspects; Daniel, Milo, and Rowan. They've got nothing in common, apart from the fact that Kira has a crush on all of them. What if one of the boys (or the one she's falling head-over-heels for) is the killer? Juggling a murder? No problem. Juggling three guys? Big problem.

Never Bite a Boy On the First Date is a hilarious vampire romance coming from HarperTeen author Tamara Summers. Kira, the protagonist is a fun, unprecedented character surrounded with three very different guys who all want to be with her. Her so-called 'investigations' lead her with kisses coming from all three suspects and she finds that one of them has a history with her...

Rowan, the brooding poet, and one of Kira's suspects is creepy and secretive, making him all the more guilty through Kira's eyes. He has weird hobbies and obsessions and his parents are overprotective of him; never letting him leave the house and always checking in. Doesn't that seem suspicious?

Kira's other suspect, Daniel, is probably the most conspicuous character (but he may or may not be the guilty one! Read to find out!) out of the three, but his charming, mysterious allure lures Kira in. There's just one problem; is he good, or is he bad? Can he be trusted?

Milo is probably my favorite out of all Kira's suspects. He's bright, he's hott, he's completely amazing and Kira has him completely under her spell...and vice-versa. It's too bad he has a secret...and it's a secret that will tear them apart. A+ =)

The Bottom Line: As you can see, characterization is the best part of the novel, but that isn't to say that everything else is dull. In fact, it isn't. Everything is perfect and the plot, the characters, the writing, makes for an vamptastic and romantically amazing novel! Read it and find out the real suspect!

Character Connection: Dan Devlin (Character Interview)

Hi again folks! I'm posting this a little bit early for Terri Clark Week, but here's Dan Devlin, the totally swoon-worthy male lead in SLEEPLESS!

TUBL: How is it like, being with Trinity? Do you feel helpless sometimes?
Dan: Yeah, I'd never tell her that. But when she's asleep she's vulnerable and I'm powerless to help her. I'll find a way though.

TUBL: Do you wish you had 'powers' like Trinity?
Dan: Only so I could help her. Otherwise, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

TUBL:What do you like to do? What are your hobbies?
Dan: Hobbies? Irritating my dad and water sports. This is Florida, I'm in the water as much as possible.

TUBL: Do you feel very protective over Trin?
Dan: Surprisingly. Initially I agreed to help out because someone needed to right my dad's wrongs, but she's been growing on me.

TUBL: What is your relationship with Trin like?
Dan: I don't know if you could call what we have right now a relationship, but I find her unnerving, frustrating, incredibly strong and exciting. Don't repeat that!

Thanks Dan for letting me interview you! That was super fun! I hope y'all liked it =)

Character Connection: Trinity Michaels (Character Interview)

Hey guys! For Terri Clark Week, I have Trinity from SLEEPLESS here with my today! So ladies and gents, here is the awesomely cool Trinity Michaels!

TUBL: How does it feel like, being to go into other people's dreams?
Trinity: Honestly, it feels like a massive invasion of privacy. Imagine suddenly popping into someone's house, where you weren't invited, and you get the idea. I'm like a brain burglar!

TUBL: How does it feel to be able to get hurt through your dreams? Are you scared?
Trinity: Uh, yeah, I'm scared. For most people sleep is a respite, a safe place to escape. I already had issues falling asleep, because it meant getting sucked into someone else's dream, but now...nowhere is safe. I need to find a way to change that.

TUBL: Is your 'power' of dreams passed down from generation to generation? Or are you the only one?
Trinity: As far as I know, I'm the first. My mom thinks trauma triggered the dream thing. She also thinks everyone has natural psychic abilities, but some people are better able to tap into those talents than others.

TUBL: If you didn't have your power, how do you think your life would be like?
Trinity: Normal, I would hope. But then I'm beginning to realize that normal is relative and maybe this is something I need to come to grips with instead of denying.

TUBL: What's your relationship with Dan like?
Trinity: It's...complicated, confusing and crazy. Sure, he's like smokin' hot, but he's also the son of my sworn enemy. Hullo, there are lines you don't cross. Then again, he may just be the only one who can save my ass.

There ya go folks! Trinity was fun to talk to! Of course, we also gossiped more about Dan afterward (hehe)...he'll be on here tomorrow so watch out!

Sleepless by Terri Clark (Re-post)

Title: Sleepless
Author: Terri Clark
Pages: 288
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: September 2, 2008

***Note: This is a re-post of my review. Make sure to join my contest for SLEEPLESS here!***

Catch-Some-ZZZs Cheeseburger and Fries

Up-All-Night Chocolate-Chip Cookies with Milk

I can't go to sleep!!! And not because of the cute boy lying next to me. There's a killer stalking me in my dreams. And if it's up to him...I'll never wake up. I have to find a way to get him, before he gets me.

Trinity Michaels is just a teenager trying to enjoy her last summer before college. But seeing the future in her dreams complicates things. When Kiri, a girl Trinity met, comes to her in need of help to save herself from a murderer, it's too late for Trinity to save her. Trin thought that Rafe, Kiri's murderer, would get the justice he deserves in court. But his lawyer pulls off dirty tricks to keep Rafe out of jail. Now, the killer haunts her dreams...waiting, and waiting for the right moment to kill her in her own slumber. She will be forced to ask help from the devil himself-Dan Devlin, the lawyer's son. She will have to take risks, trust dan (and love him?) in order to save everyone she cares about. Rafe has plans for all of them. . . . .

Judging by the cover, the reader would think that Sleepless is just another one of those cheesy heroine books...the problem is, it's not. It's much, much more that just that. Terri Clark will have the reader amazed with all the suspense, drama, and action in Sleepless. The sharp and intense mood will have the reader hooked with the unexpected, unnerving plot.

Sleepless is a consuming and shockful read, punctuated with developed, unique, and individual characters that make the action and plot more dangerous and dramatic. Trinity, Dan, and the characters that surround them, play a big part in the story. The readers will not get enough of these clever, amusing characters that make fallible mistakes as well. Trin and Dan will do whatever it takes to put Rafe in his place. The always-changing setting of Sleepless is fitted with it's witty and modern voice. Clark's writing style was alluring and fluid. It built up effortlessly to a striking and vivid climax.

An element that Clark succeeded in, was the romance in Sleepless. As the book progressed, so did the chemistry between the two characters. It's slow and enigmatic. Both characters took time to know themselves better, rather than diving straight in. It's realistic and not at all like the usual romance in other chick-lit books.

The Bottom Line: This has now made its way into the top of my favorite list. I borrowed this from my library and now, I'm going to buy my own copy. It's THAT amazing. I loved it from start to finish. Don't judge the cover...it doesn't at all reflect how the book is. The best thriller read I've had in a long time. A+ :-)

Author Uncovered: Terri Clark (Author Interview)

Hey again guys! As you know, I'm hosting Terri for Terri Clark Week and I'm psyched to be interviewing her! She's a nice author to talk to! Believe me, I've sent her probably 30 emails already! Anyway, here's it the interview. Have fun!

Her books:

Did you always want to become an author?
No, I didn't always know I wanted to be an author. I've always been a writer, it's just what I did, who I was, but it wasn't until I became a stay-at-home mom and found an online writing community that I thought, "you know, I could take this seriously."

Who or what was your inspiration for Sleepless?
Sleepless came together from a few different things. Part of it came from my personal fascination with dreams-- I'm a firm believer that our minds are busy when we sleep and our subconscious is doing a lot more than just worrying over problems or replaying the days events--part of it came from my psychology background, I earned a BA in college and remember how barbaric "treatment" was long ago, and part of it came from a series of articles that ran in my local newspaper. The expose was about violent criminals who pretended insanity so they'd go to a mental hospital instead of jail. A follow-up a year later showed little to nothing had changed and I got so mad I created my villain so I could write that wrong.

What would you do if you were in Trinity's position? If you had her 'gift'?
Initially, I think I'd freak and then I'd do some serious research to find answers and someone who could teach me how to deal with my ability.

How does it feel like, knowing your books are on those bookshelves in a bookstore?
It's incredible! A real dream come true. And I want more than anything to keep getting more books out there with my name on them.

Did you base any of your characters on real people?
Not really. There are parts of me in Trin, but only little bits.

What are your ten, most favorite things?
Hmm. Family is number one and then, in no particular order, chocolate, Supernatural, coffee, books, horror movies, the Goonies, teens, television, fairies and coming up with a wicked cool new book idea (and then pulling it off!).

What do you see as your strengths and weaknesses as a writer?
Wow, no one has asked me that before. I think I'm pretty good at dialogue, I love writing banter, and probably humor and creating a palpable, eery mood. I suck at writing setting, it takes lots of effort on my part and help from my critique partner, and I tend to hurry things along too much in the first go 'round. I've been told I'm a kick butt rewriter, but I'd like to get kick butt first time out.

How did you come up with the name Trinity? It's a little unusual, but I love it nonetheless!
I was actually looking at tattoos and I found the celtic trinity symbol (also called a triquetra). It represents father, son and the holy ghost to some, for others it's mother, crone and maiden and finally, the meaning I best liked, mind, body and spirit. I didn't end up getting that knot, but the word and meaning stuck with me and I thought it was a cool name for a girl struggling to balance her own mind, body and spirit.

Do you have any upcoming books? Do you have anything else you need to say?
I do! I'm doing revisions now on a book called Hollyweird. It's more comedic than Sleepless and will be out in 2011. It's about two girls who win a trip to meet their favorite TV show hunk only to learn he's the son of Satan and the only person who can save them from him is a fallen angel working undercover as his personal assistant.

As for anything else to say...thank you so much for inviting me to your blog! I hope you and your readers will keep in touch and look for updates on my website (terriclarkbooks.com) and my blog (http://terriclark.livejournal.com/).

Terri also wants to have a sequel to Sleepless (which I SOOO want), but her editor isn't letting her publishing it. Let's show the editor that Sleepless is a great book because it is! Do you think I'd be hosting author week with Terri if I didn't like her book? I love it!

Cindy's Surprise Contest and Big Box Challenge!!!

This is my entry for the Big Box Challenge:
So, I'm participating in Cindy's contest over here and this is my first time making a remake of a cover...so, I'm crossing my fingers that I get this right:

It's the remake of the FALLEN cover. Here, in the first picture, they're so far away, and then they get closer and closer as the cover goes down until you have clasped hands. You know how they're destined to love each other and at the same time not? Well, here, I'm trying to portray that they are so close to being together, but not close enough. Does that make sense? Tell me what you think...bad or good? Be honest...lol!

This is my entry for the Surprise Contest:
Mini challenge time!

Name 8 Of Your Favorite Things (not all books either LOL)

1. Myself (Who wouldn't?!? =D)
2. Yodeling (Seriously, I'm in the mood for some Yodel-eh-eh-o's! lol!)
3. Phineas and Ferb (I'm loving Bow-Chica-Wow-Wow! I am such a kid)
4. The phrase: EPIC FAIL (I love saying this to my sisters! I'm so mean! Joke!)
