The Unwritten Rule by Elizabeth Scott

Title: The Unwritten Rule
Author: Elizabeth Scott
Pages: 224
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Publication Date: March 16, 2010

Everyone knows the unwritten rule: You don't like your best friend's boyfriend. Sarah has had a crush on Ryan for years. He's easy to talk to, supersmart, and totally gets her. Lately it even seems like he's paying extra attention to her. Everything would be perfect except for two things: Ryan is Brianna's boyfriend, and Brianna is Sarah's best friend. Sarah forces herself to avoid Ryan and tries to convince herself not to like him. She feels so guilty for wanting him, and the last thing she wants is to hurt her best friend. But when she's thrown together with Ryan one night, something happens. It's wonderful...and awful. Sarah is torn apart by guilt, but what she feels is nothing short of addiction, and she can't stop herself from wanting more...

All's fair in love and war. That is and isn't the case here. Sarah liked Ryan first...ever since the eighth grade actually. But that doesn't matter to Brianna, Sarah's best friend. Brianna siddles up to Ryan, works her charm, and captures his attention...at least until he gets a taste of Sarah. But Sara is rational and is all too aware of the unwritten rule; you aren't supposed to like your best friend's boyfriend. As she struggles to deal with her feelings for Ryan, guilt and fear for Brianna's friendship consumes her. What's more is that Brianna's emotionally breaking down because of family-related problems and Sarah is her only lifeboat. When Sarah is given the chance to be with Ryan, will she take that leap of faith? And if she does, what will Sarah think?

Elizabeth Scott weaves a contemporary tale of family, friendship, and romance. The Unwritten Rule is set in such a normal and real environment that readers cannot help but feel empathy towards the characters and their different situations. With such an indifferent topic, Scott evokes so many emotions in the reader and at the same time, forges a connection between the reader and the book.

Sarah is a conflicted over-thinker that teenagers will definitely be able to relate to. She's lost and depends on Brianna as her only source of friendship. Sarah stands behind Brianna's shadow; doing whatever Brianna wants and always putting Brianna first, before herself. But as The Unwritten Rule goes on, her personality becomes more solid and her growth as a person is evident in her strong narration.

The Unwritten Rule revolves around a pretty complex concept that shows the hardships of a teenager in four very important aspects; family, friendship, finding yourself, and love. Elizabeth Scott's pure and simple writing is perfectly blended to mold this beautiful story. The Unwritten Rule is a book that focuses on the drama, heartache, and confusion that is bonded with a teenager's experience. A =)

The Bottom Line: There are exceptions to every rule.

I agree Reggie. I really enjoyed this book. Elizabeth has the gift of making her character's feelings just jump off of the pages.

Nice review as per usual! :D

'Overthinker' - I seem to have wiped out the word in my vocabulary, but funny how at one point in our teenage life we all were like that. I like how this book seems to focus on friendship, which in reality will really be too huge a risk - looking forward to picking up this one. Thanks for the review Reggie!

This is one of those premises that I'm never interested in... I mean, you just don't date your best friend's (ex) boyfriend... except I really want to read this book in particular. : ) I think a huge part of that is because the cover art is wonderful... but I've also seen a bunch of good reviews of it... so now I'm super curious... (Hope I can win it in the Publisher Contest... I requested Simon & Schuster, lol).

The Library Lurker March 29, 2010 at 6:10 AM

I've been pining for this book for sooo long, and I'm extremely happy that it should stand up against my standards. Great review!

I love the cover for this book. And I like that it sounds like it has a little more depth than I thought it would. I always like it when I can watch the main character grow and strength who he/she is.

Cherry March 29, 2010 at 11:34 PM

How's your new background? Very YA :)

Your review? Lovely! The cover could do better though :( It just not very attractive to my reader's eyes...

I don't know why I haven't read any of her books yet. She seems like my kind of author. It's a good thing I bought one of her books recently. Now it's just a matter of time for me to read it (stop growing TBR pile *sigh*)

Bookish in a Box March 31, 2010 at 12:19 AM

The Unwritten Rule sounds more complex than I thought (and in a good way). I haven't read any of Elizabeth Scott's books, but I can't wait to try one out.

Tere1494 April 8, 2010 at 8:53 AM

Well...I loved your review. I haven´t read the book but I read another one from Elizabeth that´s Love you, Hate you, Miss You...that´s pretty cool and it seems that She continues for the form of her writting talking about stuff that are related to teenage troubles and that´s a great help and sometimes you can relate so well to her characters.

A wonderful Author...Thanks I´d add this book on my list

I see that many people chose to comment on this review for extra entries!! :D

I loved THE UNWRITTEN RULE! I just wish that Scott's novels were LONGER! But I thought that she did a great job of writing Sarah's emotions; I could really relate.

Ashley April 13, 2010 at 5:11 AM

Anonymous,  July 12, 2010 at 4:11 PM

The Unwritten Rule was awesome!

I have to agree with your perfect score for the characters. Without spoiling the story, I have to say that it was SO HARD for me to hate certain people because they were written very realistically.

Plus, there's Ryan. UGH. I want a Ryan.

Awesome review. I agree wholeheartedly. ;)
